Finally we have a feature which takes in some of the coverage of black entertainers and sportsmen.
Finally we have a feature which takes in some of the coverage of black entertainers and sportsmen.

Viewed with a modern eye these snapshots can appear comic, or indeed insulting, but invariably they provide a rare and precious insight into times gone by.

Here we provide four audio features which take us through some of the archive which was discovered and has been viewed by a number of leading contemporary black commentators.

In addition to extracts from the archives themselves, we hear the views of people like David Lammy, Tony Sewell, Lee Jasper, Felix Dexter and Carroll Thompson as they reflect on what they have seen.

The first is based on a series called The Inheritors from 1958, which looked at a number of Caribbean and African nations as they stepped away from the British Empire, to self-governance.

The second is based largely on a 1969 edition of 'Man Alive', the leading documentary strand of its day, called 'The Black American Dream'.  It looks at the civil rights struggle in the USA and the rise of the Black Power movement.

Third, we have 'Calypso for Constantine', an unusual programme for 1966 because its narrator as well as its subject was black. It features lengthy conversations between Sir Learie Constantine and the young South African writer, Lewis Nkosi.
